Eric Sloane was an American landscape painter, illustrator, and author of illustrated books on the cultural history and folklore of America. He was also fascinated by weather, The Farmer's Almanac and the early American farmer's ability to interpret "weather signs.” He is credited with being the first television weatherman, having come up with the idea of having farmers from all over New England call in their weather observations to a Dumont, New York TV station where they could be broadcast to the regional audience. Dover Publications reissued 6 of his books about the weather. With his insightful hand-drawn diagrams, he is able to provide clear visual depictions of how weather works, and in one volume in particular, Skies And The Artist, he offers insights into the techniques he uses to add texture and realism to his cloud illustrations. His books have equal appeal to art students, lovers of Americana and those with a fascination for how weather works.
