The Lotus Type 1 wrote history as the first full-fledged wing vehicle of the Formula 78. This machine was introduced in 1977 in the first round of the Great Prize of Argentina and has a slim body based on a sharp wedge shape. Then the inside of the side pontoon has a wing shape that is turned upside down by the plane, and downforce is created by ground effect. The innovative idea of increasing the contact force of the tyres without increasing air resistance has been used to achieve unparalleled cornering speeds. Mario Andretti and Gunnar Nilsson were driving this year. Andretti won the West American, Spanish, French and Italian GP, while Nilsson also won the Belgian GP. Type 1, which was used until the first half of 1978, left a strong impression on the prestigious revival.
