D-Day - June 6, 1944 The Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Germany’s control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military raids in history and required extensive planning.	6 original coins This collection of 6 coins represents a faithful reflection of the main participants of the Normandy landings, the United States, Great Britain and Canada. Also the Australians with fewer soldiers collaborated in the liberation. We have included a coin from France and Belgium as they were the first territories liberated.	Countries in the Collection Australia: 1/2 Penny (1939-45) - Belgium: 10 Centimes (1941-45) - Canada: 5 Cent (1944-45) - France: 50 Centimes (1939-45) - United Kingdom: 1 Penny (1939-45) - United States: 1 Cent (1943)	Special Mintages Canada, 5 cent 1944-45: Because nickel is so important for producing war materials, tombac (a type of brass) was used as a replacement. The coin was given its 12-sided shape so as not to be confused with the penny.
