Honeywort (Cerinthe Major Purpurascens)

Do you want to attract hummingbirds to your garden? Start these honeywort seeds! Cerinthe major purpurascens is a hummingbird magnet, and it also attracts other birds and bees. Honeywort plant is fast-growing and rewarding to grow from seeds. It features nodding clusters of rich, blue-purple, tube-like flowers on arching stems.

Honeywort's foliage is unique and just as attractive with mottled bluish mauve leaves that spiral up the many branching stems. It is known to easily self-sow its seeds for the following year's marvelous blue flowers. These plants are continuous bloomers: they begin in the spring and persist into autumn. Honeywort is also known as blue wax flower: it is so named due to the waxy appearance of the leaves that grow closest around each blossom.

How To Grow

Honeywort is native to the Mediterranean region and can be a tender perennial in frost-free climates. It is ideal to start the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last expected frost.

Sow seeds into trays or small pots and cover with1/8 inch of soil. Keep soil moist, but not saturated. Honeywort plants must be grown in well-draining soil. Under these conditions, the seeds will germinate in 14-21 days.

If harvesting as a cut flower, it is best to do so in the coolest time of the day when the most moisture is retained. If harvested appropriately, these blooms can last up to 10 days.
