Excercise: European Hedgehog

Step 1

Draw a large oval suggesting the hedgehog’s body and a smaller one on the lower side for his head.

Step 2

Draw a few guidelines for the positioning of the feet and paws, and then place the eye on the side of the head. Add two curves to suggest the pointy nose and two triangles (a larger one and a smaller one) for his pointy ears.

Step 3

Add straight lines along the main oval drawing to suggest the hedgehog’s stiff spines. Draw a small dark circle for the (visible) eye and a black round nose at the end of the snout. Define the short legs and the clawed feet.

Step 4

Draw spines all over the body except the face and feet.

Squirrel Monkey

The squirrel monkey is a small, diurnal primate that lives in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Though not very vocal, it is a highly social species that spends most of its time foraging for fruits and insects, also taking leaves, seeds, and the occasional small vertebrate. Mating occurs during a short breeding season, after which females birth one offspring, and males offer no paternal care.

Gray Wolf

Perhaps best known for their ominous multi-member howling displays, wolves are highly social animals that rely on a complex set of behaviors, scents, and vocalizations to communicate and function as a tight-knit group, working cooperatively to hunt, defend territories, and raise young. Family packs are headed up by a dominant breeding pair, the alphas, who set the tone for interactions among group members and lead pack activities.

Zebra

Best known for their stripes, which vary by individual and function to confuse would-be predators, zebras are social animals that communicate through complex physical displays and vocalizations. Most zebras are nomadic, living in herds made up of one stallion, several females, and their offspring, and often congregate for migration, traveling in multi-herd groups of up to 10,000 individuals.
