The Complete Guide to Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that encourages the body to balance and heal itself. It involves applying finger or thumb pressure to specify points on the hands and feet. These points are called 'reflexes'; and they reflect, or micro, the organs and structures of the body as well as a person's emotional health. In this way, the hands and feet are 'mini maps' or 'microcosms' of the body that can be used to encourage holistic healing.

Techniques and How to work Reflexes

Thumb-walking

Metacarpal manipulation

Action for Brain Reflexology

Action for Lymph Node Reflexes

Pressure Technique for the foot

Thumb-walking

Using the lateral edge of the thumb, bend and straighten the thumb so that it moves along the foot in a tiny crawling movement.

Hand Relaxation Techniques

Metacarpal manipulation

Supporting your client’s hand in your fingers or linking your fingers into your client’s fingers, place your two thumbs in the middle of his or her palm and slide your thumbs downwards between the metacarpals so that you stroke them longitudinally. You can also jiggle the metacarpals as you stroke. Repeat on the top of the hand.

Brain Reflex

How do you work the brain reflex?

Hold the big toe or thumb with the fingers of your support hand and work the brain reflex by applying an on–off pressure with either the tip of your thumb or finger or with the knuckle of your index finger. Be sure to work the tips/caps of the toes and thumbs as close to the nails as possible, and do not work the pads as these are different reflexes.

Lymph Node Reflexes

How do you work the Lymphatics of the lower body and groin?

Work by finger-walking or finger-rotating the band from the lateral side to the medial side. Repeat action a number of times. These reflexes can also be worked with the following technique on the feet:

Pressure techniques: Using the middle finger of each of your hands, apply pressure to the points located on the lymphatic band that lie under the malleoli and apply an on–off pressure so that you are ‘pumping’ these reflexes. Once you have pumped them a number of times, finger-walk the band from the lateral side to the medial side a few times.

Important Areas and Zones

Referral Areas

Transverse Areas

Ten Reflexology Zones

Ten Longitudinal Zones

Referral Areas

The body’s referral areas are as follows:

Shoulders = hips

Arms = legs

Elbows = knees

Wrists = ankles

Hands = feet

The Transverse Zones

• Shoulder line: Above your shoulder line is your head.

• Diaphragm line: This line is not so easy to see, but it can be felt as it follows your diaphragm muscle, which curves below your ribcage and separates your thorax from your abdomen. Between your shoulder line and diaphragm line is your thorax.

• Waist line: Between the diaphragm line and waist line is the upper abdomen.

• Pelvic line: Between your waist line and pelvic line is your lower abdomen and below your pelvic line is your pelvis.

The Ten Reflexology Zones

The human body can be divided into ten longitudinal zones. Look at your feet and imagine lines running up from each of your toes, all the way up through your body to your head and then down into each of your fingertips. You will notice that there are ten lines running from your feet to your head and ten from your head to your hands. These are the ten longitudinal zones and they form the basis of zone therapy.

The Ten Longitudinal Zones of the Feet

To remember the longitudinal zones of the foot simply count your toes and always start with the big toe as zone 1 and finish with the little toe as zone 5. Remember that your big toe itself contains five zones because all the zones of the body merge in your head.
