Best time to travel

Berlin is at its best in spring, summer and autumn. Avoid winter: Berlin is not particularly attractive during the winter months, unless you visit in the weeks before Christmas, when festive decorations and lights bring some cheer to an otherwise cold and grey city. Christmas markets such as the Weihnachtszauber (Christmas Magic) at the Gendarmenmarkt in Mitte transform pockets of the city into small worlds of enchantment. As soon as spring brings a little warmth and sunshine, Berlin restaurants and cafés seem to spill onto the streets, and it can feel like half the people in the city are sitting outdoors, wrapped in snug blankets and sipping on café lattes.

Prenzlauer Berg

Zuckerstück (1)

For a great start to the day, let's begin with breakfast at Zuckerstück, a café that feels like a delightful anachronism in this part of the city. Beware, though—you may find it difficult to leave. Lucie and Andre's love of detail shows in the sweet, homely world they have created. Take a seat in one of the comfortable lounge chairs and let your hosts spoil you. If you do decide to move on, make sure to pick up some delicious punch for home, or come back for some cake later. Schivelbeiner Str. 7, 10439 Berlin.

Nickels (12)

This store is dedicated to bed linen, woollen blankets, pillows and cushions. Its textiles are simple, contemporary and of exquisite quality. Nickels also stocks its own label of pyjamas and bed linen. Owner Dorit Nickel collates current trends, colours and inspiring ideas in a collage on a wall above the sideboard. Sredzkistr.

Kauf Dich Glücklich (16)

It's time for a little waffle break. Just a few steps further along the street you'll find Kauf Dich Glücklich, meaning ‘Shop Yourself Happy’. As the name suggests, this store has more to offer than its delicious waffles, which you can enjoy from the old GDR ice cream- parlour seats outside or the vintage lounge chairs inside. The store sells a selection of fashion items and home accessories displayed on simple shelves made of untreated wood. While this creates an air of charming improvisation, Kauf Dich Glücklich is in fact a successful small chain with thirteen German stores.
