What is Urad Dal?
Urad dal, also known as black gram, is a type of lentil that can be found in two forms: whole (with skin) and split (skinned). The skinned variety is commonly referred to as "white urad dal." When the black outer skin is removed, the lentil appears white or cream-colored. It has a milder flavor compared to the whole black gram and retains a creamy texture when cooked.
White urad dal is frequently used in South Indian dishes such as dosa and idli batter, providing a smooth consistency. It is also a key ingredient in various other dishes like dal tadka and soups. Like the whole black gram, skinned urad dal is a good source of protein, fiber, iron, and other essential nutrients.
