Veles, or Volos, is a major Slavic god of the underworld, he is the protector of the cattle and animals, as such often depicted as an old shepherd or a bear. Veles is the enemy of the Thunder God Perun, the myth of their battle is the source of the Ancient Slavic explanation to storm and weather change, Veles would lose each time but their battle is cyclical and the death of Veles was never permanent, he would be reborn into a new body and rainwater would be created from his old possessions. Veles represent nature’s earthy creations and Perun represents heaven’s smite of lighting and fire.
