In 1942, anticipating street fighting in the planned attack on Stalingrad, the HWa ordered a total of 24 special vehicles mounting a 15cm sIG 33 on the hull of a StuG (PzKpfw III).

The Munitionpanzer III attached to s PzAbt 505 were also used to carry heavy timbers and other bridge-building materials.

The large wooden box fitted on the superstructure of a Bergepanzer III contained special recovery equipment and a selection of tools. The vehicle also carried a dismountable 2,000kg-capacity auxiliary crane.
